For
this challenge, I think it may have to be split into separate posts, I don’t
want to make these posts extremely long but I also want to give each headline a
lot of discussion. So, with that being said let’s get onto the first headline:
Florida
Teenagers Who Mocked Drowning Man Won’t Face Charges
This
headline comes from NBCNEWS.com. and THESTAR.com. I saw this headline and was intrigued, so many
question ran though my head. First of all, why would someone, ANYONE whether it
be a teenager or not just stand by and watch let alone mock a man as he was
drowning? Second of all how did authorities know that the teenagers mocked this
man? Well I am not one who jumps immediately to conclusions. So, I began
reading the article. Here are some of the facts that I have learned about this
headline….
- · there were 5 teenagers who were involved in this article. They came upon a man who was in a pond in a park in Florida
- · The teenagers began filming the man as he struggled to keep his head above water
- · The struggling man called to the teenagers for help
- · The teenagers can be heard heckling the man and even at one point swearing at him and saying “yeah B---- you should have never got in there!” and another teen was heard saying “let him drown, What the heck!”
- · The video was recorded on July 9th and the man’s body was not discovered until July 14th when a passerby saw him floating on the edge of the pond.
- · That the US does not have a law that requires someone to render aid
OK now with some of the facts laid out. I want to put forth a disclaimer that the
thoughts in this part of the blog are my personal opinion and are not meant to
offend anyone but merely state my feelings on this article. I am appalled by
the actions of these kids, now it’s one thing to not help but they stood
watched, filmed and taunted the drowning man. WHY!!! How hard would it have
been to instead of turning on their camera to instead dial 911 and state that
someone had fallen into the pond? They
could have even done this anonymously. I as a mother would be devastated if
this was one of my children that treated a fellow person who was obviously in
distress in this manner. Now I understand that as a parent you can only hope your
child makes the right choice, but ultimately, they will make their own decisions.
One of the worst parts of this
article I feel is the fact that even after they watched the man drown they
never said anything to authorities until his body was recovered 5 days later.
(it was found by someone else). What is in these youth’s heads? Why did they think their actions were ok? I am
not saying that they should have or should not have offered help. But all it
would have taken is a phone call and this story may have had a different
outcome. I feel terrible for the man’s family to have had to listen to the
teenagers teasing their loved one.
What’s
your opinion on this article? Would you have helped? Please leave a comment. I
have attached the articles so you can read more about it and make an informed
opinion.
